Provincial Food Bank Associations Recognized for their Hard Work and Tireless Efforts to Help Feed Canadians
TORONTO, Aug. 31, 2011 /CNW/ - Helping Canadians receive the food and nourishment they need is a huge job. Many food banks across Canada are devoted to helping those in need on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the demand on food banks is consistently high and many face inadequate funding and/or a shortage in donations. As a viable resource within Canadian communities, food banks rely heavily on the support from many companies and individuals in order to continue to help feed Canadians across the country.
As a longtime supporter of local Canadian communities, PepsiCo Foods Canada, through its Lay's brand, is proud to be able to help. Having worked closely with Canadian farming communities from coast-to-coast for more than 25 years to grow the highest quality potatoes from local Canadian soil, the Lay's brand is committed to supporting and giving back to community organizations such as our food banks, when they need it most. The Lay's brand is thrilled to be donating a total of $100,000 to provincial food bank associations across the country.
"Lay's has maintained strong relationships with Canadian farming communities for many years because we both share a common goal - growing potatoes, in our case, and providing food and snacks that Canadians can feel good eating," says Claudia Calderon, senior marketing manager, Lay's. "Canadian food banks work day-in and day-out to accomplish a very similar goal, and so it is our pleasure to be able to support the hard work that they're doing to help feed Canadians in need."
Canada's provincial food bank associations are responsible for managing the operations of food banks in each respective province. The individual monetary donations from the Lay's brand will be put towards such elements as the purchase and transportation of food items, the support of provincial programs, and in raising awareness for their cause.
"More than 800,000 Canadians used food banks last year, which is the highest level on record yet," says Amanda Finley Key, development coordinator, Ontario Association of Food Banks. "And over 50 per cent of these food bank users are young families1. On behalf of provincial food bank associations across the country, I am pleased to say that this donation will make a world of difference in helping to ensure Canadians are getting the food they need."
The Lay's donation will support the following provincial food bank associations:
