The Quaker® brand announces partnership with The Grocery Foundation to help provide breakfast and snacks for kids in more than 800 Ontario schools

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ - The breakfast experts at the Quaker brand have begun a new partnership with The Grocery Foundation that will help Breakfast for Learning, a charitable organization, provide the most important meal of the day, as well as snacks, to more than 800 schools across the province this year.

Through the charitable foundation led by Ontario grocery leaders, the Quaker brand will provide vouchers for products including Quaker Instant Oatmeal as well as Quaker Chewy granola bars for an Ontario school child nutrition voucher program, that supports breakfast and snack nutrition programs at participating schools.

According to Kathryn Matheson, vice-president, Marketing Quaker Foods and PepsiCo Foods Innovation at PepsiCo Foods Canada, the Quaker brand is proud to support The Grocery Foundation's efforts with Breakfast for Learning.

"We believe in the power of a nutritious breakfast. A breakfast of Quaker oatmeal can help start the day right. However, many Canadian children do not have access to a nutritional breakfast," says Matheson. "This important program with Breakfast for Learning and The Grocery Foundation is a natural fit with our brand philosophy to help ensure that all Canadian kids have the opportunity to start the day right and to be the best they can be at school, especially children who are in need."

The Ontario school nutrition voucher program is administered by Breakfast for Learning. Each year, the voucher program accepts applications from needy schools with breakfast, snack, and lunch programs who want to participate. Chosen schools purchase food vouchers at substantially reduced costs enabling them to stretch their budgets and access nutritious foods from Ontario grocers and top Canadian brands like Quaker.

"Breakfast for Learning relies on the generosity of supporters like The Grocery Foundation and its members like Quaker to operate," says Wendy Wong, President & CEO, Breakfast for Learning. "The financial support and in-kind support mean more children in the province of Ontario can be provided with healthy nutritious food, enabling them to function better and achieve greater success in school."

Supporting the needs of Canadians who may otherwise go hungry is an important cause to the Quaker brand. In January 2011, the Quaker brand announced a partnership with Food Banks Canada called Unlock Amazing with Olympic Champion Alex Bilodeau, and donated two million oatmeal breakfasts to Food Banks Canada. By the end of 2011, the Quaker brand plans to donate another one million oatmeal breakfasts to food banks through the second half of its Unlock Amazing program, which is currently underway.
