Sustainability
At Frito Lay Canada, we are committed to growth but there is one key area of our business that we've been striving to reduce for many years: our footprint on the planet. We are on a journey to reduce our environmental impact, a journey of sustainability.
Our goals are clear - we strive to use less water, electricity and fuels while reducing waste for everything we make, move, and sell. Our long-term vision is to leave no trace.

Resource conservation programs have been in place for over a decade and our employee-driven Green Teams and Resource Conservation Teams have led the way in reducing the amount of water, electricity and fuel that is used in our facilities and in our manufacturing processes. As a result of these teams and their efforts we have:

  • Reduced our electricity consumption by more than 20% since 1999 for every kilogram of snacks we produce.
  • Reduced our manufacturing fuel consumption by over 20% since 1999 per kilogram of snacks produced.
  • Reduced our water consumption by 30% since 1999, saving 5.4 billion litres of water through changes in our manufacturing plants.
  • Diverted more than 92% of our manufacturing waste from landfills into beneficial re-use streams in 2009.
  • Leveraged heat recovery systems at all of our plants which capture waste heat from the exhaust of manufacturing line. The collected heat is used to dry starch, heat water or oil and warm buildings, which reduces overall energy consumption in each facility.
  • Reused approximately 40 million shipping cartons since 1999.

With one of the largest private fleets in Canada, we are continuously working to find ways to optimize our delivery routes. We have begun rolling out lighter-weight and more efficient Sprinter vehicles into our fleet. Through route optimizations we have been able to remove vehicles from the road while being one of the fastest growing consumer packaged goods companies in Canada.

In 2009 we opened a new "green" distribution centre facility in Surrey, British Colombia. This distribution centre was constructed to be a LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designs) facility and serves as a model for the rest of our facilities through innovations in green power, alternative lighting, energy efficiency standards and environmentally-conscious construction choices. As we make improvements to the rest of our sites, we anticipate that this will be the first of many to earn LEED certification.

In March 2010, the SunChips® brand is introducing the world's first 100% compostable chip bag of its kind across North America. Instead of using non-renewable materials to make our SunChips®  packaging, we will begin producing SunChips® multigrain chips in bags made from more than 90% renewable, plant-based materials. This new SunChips® package will completely break down into compost in a hot, active home or industrial compost pile. For more information, please visit www.sunchips.ca.

Frito Lay Canada is proud to be recognized for our environmental contributions:

At Frito Lay Canada we have only just begun our sustainability journey and we firmly believe our efforts will have a long-term benefit to our consumers and the environment.
